These images will show a completely different perspective of New York City in the 19th century.

As the city known as the wealthiest city at present, New York is always considered as a symbol of prosperity. However, few people know that besides the glamorous images, the iconic skyscrapers, this city also had an entirely opposite area.

Around the 19th century, New York City had more than 1 million immigrants living in poverty. To have a clearer view of the “dark side” of the city, Danish photographer Jacob Riis decided to capture the poor and deprived lives of people living in slums in New York in his book “How the Other Half Lives”.

It is known that the purpose of this book was to raise awareness about poverty in New York and promote measures to support those in need. Insider said that photographer Jacob Riis himself also had a difficult childhood when he experienced the feeling of having nowhere to live and no money to spend. Therefore, he fully understood the lives of these people.
